Can you get a mobility scooter through Medicare?

Can you get a mobility scooter through Medicare?

Medicare in Australia does not fund the purchase of mobility scooters.

HOWEVER, you may be eligible for funding through your Aged Care Package (visit this link to learn more)

Mobility scooters are not considered essential medical equipment for the purposes of the Essential Medical Equipment Payment (EMEP).

This payment is only available for specific equipment such as home dialysis machines, home ventilators, electric wheelchairs, and similar devices.

However, there are other forms of assistance and support available for those needing mobility aids:

Aged Care Package

  • Provides support for people with significant disabilities, which may include funding for mobility scooters under certain conditions.
  • This program is accessable through ACAT (Aged Care Accessment Team)... Apply here.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

  • Provides support for people with significant disabilities, which may include funding for mobility scooters under certain conditions.
  • Link here to the NDIS

Speak to your local Occupational Therapist.

  • Schedule an appointment with your Occupational Therpist or Aged Care Package representative to discuss your mobility challenges and the potential need (and funding options) for a mobility scooter.

Benefits of Using a Mobility Scooter

Mobility scooters offer numerous benefits for individuals with limited mobility, including:

  1. Enhanced Independence: Mobility scooters provide a sense of independence and autonomy, allowing users to move around their homes and communities with greater ease.

  2. Improved Quality of Life: By facilitating mobility and reducing reliance on others for assistance, mobility scooters contribute to an overall improvement in quality of life.

  3. Reduced Pain and Fatigue: Mobility scooters help reduce physical strain and fatigue, allowing users to conserve energy and minimize pain associated with limited mobility.
